Solar panels on a residential home's roof.

Is Solar Right for Me?

Start by getting a solid grasp of your current energy use, and make sure your home or business is as energy efficient as possible. Knowing how much energy you use will help your contractor build a solar energy system tailored to your needs.

Solar Energy Checklist

Here’s what you’ll need before you can move forward with your solar project:

  • An understanding of your energy usage
Log in to your account to view your usage history over the past 12 months (in kilowatt-hours), and learn about how to perform a thorough home energy audit.
  • An appropriate billing plan
If you are enrolled in budget billing or time-of-use plan, please call us at 1-800-75-CONED so we can remove you. These plans are generally not beneficial for new solar customers.
  • A contractor
Installing solar is a team effort. While we make sure your private solar installation is properly connected to the grid, the actual installation of solar panels to your home or business is done by an independent contractor.
  • All proper building permits
Once you’ve found a contractor, they will need to obtain any necessary permits, comply with all local building and electrical codes, and pass all required inspections.
  • Con Edison approval
Your contractor will also submit your application to Con Edison. We’ll review it to make sure everything is in compliance and properly documented before giving your contractor approval to build.
  • A net meter
Once your system installation and inspections are complete, your contractor will need to notify Con Edison (PDF) to request a net meter to measure your private solar generation credits. The net meter records the difference between the amount of electricity your solar puts into the energy grid and how much you take out.
  • A final acceptance letter from Con Edison

Once your checklist is complete, your solar system can be turned on.
