Con Edison Employee From Chinatown Wins Energy Company’s Highest Honor

A Con Edison analyst originally from Manhattan’s Chinatown who now lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn has won the company’s highest honor for creating a safe space for employees to share, be heard, and support one another through the Covid-19 pandemic.

William Lee, a senior planning analyst in the company’s Bid Check Estimating group, is a winner of the Living Our Values Award, a recognition for high-achieving employees who demonstrate stellar character on and off the job. LOV winners exemplify the company's commitment to its priorities: safety, operational excellence, and providing an exceptional customer experience.

“It was important to keep everyone’s spirits up during the pandemic, which was a difficult and frightening time for all of us,” Will said. “We were all worried about our health and the health of our loved ones. It was important to provide our workers with a comfortable, safe space to work where they would know everyone appreciated their efforts.”

“Will was aware that some staff members were finding it difficult to work from home during the pandemic and some suffered with illness and death of family and friends,” said Jeffrey Rutowski, a section manager in Con Edison’s Finance group. “Will always offered his heartfelt support to the staff. He knows how important it is to have an optimistic disposition to maintain overall performance and achieve operational excellence.”

Lee’s focus goes beyond motivating his co-workers. It also includes his commitment to the Asian community in New York City. With the rise in anti-Asian violence in New York, he served as president of the Asian Professional Alliance of Con Edison (APACE), the company’s Asian Employee Resource Group.

He directed the effort to bring awareness and garner company and executive support on this topic. The group held town hall-style meetings and a session with the NYC Commission on Human Rights.

The group also worked with Con Edison’s Corporate Security team to host a session on staying safe inside and outside of the workplace.

Bridging his work at Con Edison with his efforts in the community, Lee also promoted civic engagement and empowerment by advocating voting and census participation.

His contributions at Con Edison have resulted in a safer and more inclusive work environment, both physically and psychologically.
