Con Edison's Freddy Baez Wins Recognition For Empowering Latino Youths
A Con Edison information technology specialist who co-founded a non-profit organization that helps Latino youth pursue science-based careers has earned a Circle of Achievers award from ASPIRA of New York.
Freddy Baez earned the honor for his professional achievements and work with the American Association of Latinos in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, an organization he helped start in 2016.
“It is a privilege working for Con Edison because I feel like my colleagues and I play an important role providing New Yorkers with a vital service, which is safe, reliable energy,” Baez said. “Likewise, I am passionate about my work with Latino youths because I get to contribute to our future. It’s another way to help the city and improve lives.”
ASPIRA, which began in 1961, helps young people develop leadership skills and advocates for improving education in the Puerto Rican and Latino communities. The organization began under the leadership of Antonia Pantoja, an educator and social worker who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton.
Baez, who has worked for Con Edison since 2000, grew up in the Washington Heights area of Manhattan and still lives there.
Baez has dedicated his career to achieving technical excellence and delivering value to the business areas he supports within Con Edison. His projects have included helping to implement work management systems that groups within the company use to organize tasks and assignments.
He has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in computer engineering, both from the New York Institute of Technology.
Baez is the father of a 14-year-old daughter who is a Lang Youth Medical Scholar at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. That program is a partnership between the hospital and Columbia University.
