New York City Public Policy Transmission Need

Together with New York State, we’re working to expand the transmission system to bring energy generated by offshore wind power sources to New York City.

Mitigating climate change while providing reliable energy to our customers is critical to the future of our region. We need to bring reliable, renewable options into our energy mix, and offshore wind is a crucial part of that mix. Meeting the state’s ambitious climate goal of getting to 100% clean energy by 2040 requires developing at least 9,000 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind power within the next decade.

That’s why we are moving quickly to integrate clean offshore wind into New York City’s energy grid through the Public Policy Transmission Need (PPTN) process.

Through its PPTN process, the New York Independent System Operator, Inc. (NYISO), is seeking transmission solutions that can efficiently, and cost-effectively, deliver at least 4,770 MW of offshore wind generation into New York City.

This important increase in renewable energy will help us realize our vision for a New York City powered by clean, reliable generation much sooner.

Community Improvements

Besides bringing the lasting benefits of reliable clean energy to our customers, offshore wind projects also support communities economically by creating jobs, both during construction and after, to run and manage the facilities.

Plus, since offshore wind emits no air pollutants or greenhouse gases during operation and helps reduce our reliance on fossil fuels to generate electricity, we’ll be able to cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in the communities we serve.

Work With Us as a Developer

Developing new electric infrastructure in New York City’s densely populated urban environment presents unique challenges related to siting and permitting. With more than 200 years of experience powering the city that never sleeps, you can trust Con Edison to provide the deep knowledge and hands-on expertise you need for your proposal to succeed.

Our experts will be there for you every step of the way, helping you understand the complexities of the regulatory landscape, potential permitting risks, and environmental considerations. We can guide you through the intricacies of local electrical infrastructure, including the existing onshore transmission system, and help you identify interconnection points, simplifying the planning process and keeping costs and resources to a minimum.

When you work with us, you can feel confident that your design will be ready to meet the reliability requirements of the system.

Let’s build the clean energy future together.

Technical Conference

On October 23, 2023, the company hosted a technical conference to provide an overview of the company’s electric system and potential clean energy interconnection sites, in addition to information about the collaboration process. After the presentation there was a question-and-answer portion that addressed a subset of questions submitted prior to the event.
