Con Edison Seeks Approval to Offer Access to Green Power
More than 70% of Customers Surveyed Expressed Interest in Voluntary Renewable Electricity Supply Program
Con Edison filed a petition with the New York State Public Service Commission today (See the Green Power Petition) seeking approval to start a renewable, carbon-free energy Green Power Program for residential and small commercial full- service customers.
Con Edison’s Green Power Program would purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) on behalf of customers who choose to participate. RECs confirm that the associated electricity was generated from a renewable energy resource. Approximately 2.7 million Con Edison customers would be eligible to participate in the Green Power Program.
The Green Power Program would enable residential and small commercial full-service customers to contribute to renewable energy. Over 70% of recently surveyed Con Edison residential customers expressed interest in purchasing renewable power from the utility to help reduce the carbon footprint of their electricity supply.

The Green Power Program will help New Yorkers help the state achieve its clean energy goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2040,” said Michele O’Connell, senior vice president of Customer Operations. “Con Edison is committed to leading and delivering the transition to the clean energy future and rapidly reducing the use of fossil fuels.”
Voluntary renewable energy programs offer numerous benefits beyond meeting New York State’s renewable power goals. Voluntary renewable energy programs increase customer awareness and engagement in clean energy and signal to electricity generators that clean energy is a top priority for customers.
